Hot Wheels Packaging
Hot Wheels was the brand I worked on the most while at Mattel, mainly the Hot Wheels Adult Collectibles line. We were a creative bunch and worked together so well! In the collectible market, it's widely known that packaging has opportunities unavailable to other product categories. Research shows that many collectors will buy more than one of the same item so they can enjoy one and keep others unopened since an unopened collectible is significantly more valuable than one out of its original package.

Every vehicle pack I did in the Adult/Collectible Line was intended to bring life to the vehicles based on their theme. We did lots of Limited Editions of themed vehicles that led to package structures that emulated a drive-In, an old gas station, and a "stereo" with spinning turntable.

The Racing Line was fun and evolved beyond the traditional 1/64 to include1/43, 1/24, and 1/18 scale. NASCAR was getting big again, and Hot Wheels signed Kyle Petty. I wanted all racing vehicles to look like they were going 180 mph out of turn 4 (unless the theme was "Pit Stop"). A simple compound angled platform with the vehicle rotated about 5 degrees forward really gave the desired effect and the graphics further supported the concept to finish the speed diorama presentation.
My First original package concept, 1992. Doesn't look like much here but it was nothing like anything else done for diecast vehicles at the time.
Designed this as a consultant for HotWheelsCollectors.com after leaving Mattel.
